Biographies
Ralph Fuccillo, M.A.
President
Ralph Fuccillo has served as President of the DentaQuest Foundation (formally Oral Health Foundation) since 2006.
Mr. Fuccillo is a seasoned leader in the non-profit sector with a lifelong career that has included professional and volunteer experiences in education, health and human services, and organizational development. As an advocate for disease prevention and health promotion, his work has focused on the social determinants of health, policy development, and behavior change to reduce injury and violence, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, other preventable illnesses, and now oral health.
Through his Board service to non-profit organizations, he carries his collaborative leadership approach to national and local organizations such as The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship Program (Chair), Elderhostel, The Massachusetts Dental Society Foundation, and Neighborhood Health Plan. He has served as the immediate past President of the Massachusetts Health Council and of the AIDS Acion Committee Board of Directors, Harvard School of Public Health Prevention Research Center of the National Community Committee of the CDC Prevention Research Center Program and has been a Visiting Lecturer at the Harvard Divinity School.
Mr. Fuccillo is a lecturer on health and philanthropy, an advocate for the underserved and the work of community health centers, and a frequent speaker and panel moderator at professional conferences.
Brian Souza
Managing Director
As Managing Director, Brian oversees planning, operations, programs, and external affairs for the DentaQuest Foundation. Brian serves on the Board of Directors of Our Space, Our Place, an organization dedicated to preparing blind youth for a lifetime of success. He also serves on the Steering Committee of the Geriatric Institute of Jewish Family & Children’s Service, and as an advisor to Only a Child, a non-profit shelter and support program for street youth in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Prior to his position with the DentaQuest Institute, Brian served as the Executive Director of the Boston Partnership for Older Adults. Additional prior appointments have included serving as an Advisor to the Charles H. Farnsworth Trust - Aging Policy Research Fellowship and the Elder Economic Security Standard Project of the University of Massachusetts Boston. Brian has a Master of Social Work Degree in Planning, Program Development and Human Service Management from Boston University School of Social Work and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology also from Boston University.
Michael Monopoli, DMD, MPH, MS
Director of Policy and Programs
As Director of Policy and Planning for the DentaQuest Foundation, Dr. Monopoli works to strengthen public-private partnerships and community collaborations so oral health is integrated into state and community health programming. Dr. Monopoli is a highly respected public health leader, having served as the dental director of the Office of Oral Health for the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and more recently, as Director of Dental Health Policy for Dental Services of Massachusetts. Dr. Monopoli was instrumental in the development of the Massachusetts Coalition for Oral Health and the Oral Health Collaborative of Massachusetts. He currently serves on the steering committee of the state’s Oral Health Advocacy Task Force. While at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Dr. Monopoli’s work led to an expansion of the number and geographic distribution of safety net providers of oral health services and the development of oral health training modules for non-dental providers.
Dr. Monopoli is a graduate of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. He received Master of Public Health and Master of Science degrees from the Harvard University School of Public Health and completed a fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Veterans Administration.
Carmen Fields
Associate Director National Programs
Joining the DentaQuest Foundation in October 2011, Carmen Fields brings a rich portfolio of experience in the public affairs arena, including education, corporate philanthropy, media and community relations. Her work as a journalist includes both print and broadcast with tenures at The Boston Globe and Boston television channels 7, 4 and 2. She’s been affiliated with major non-profits—like the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley; in government, with a stint with Suffolk County District Attorney Ralph C. Martin II, and the corporate world where she served in positions with increasing responsibility at public utilities KeySpan Energy and National Grid. She has served in assistant professor and adjunct roles at Northeastern and Boston Universities. Carmen currently hosts a monthly public affairs show at Boston’s WHDH-TV called "Higher Ground". Active in community organizations, Ms. Fields currently serves as board chair of the Museum of African American History in Boston, is a member of the First Literacy board, which promotes adult literacy, and of the National Grid Foundation. She is the recipient of numerous professional and service awards, among them an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Salem State University. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Ms. Fields earned a bachelor’s degree from Lincoln University (MO) and master’s degree from Boston University.
Nathan Ho
Program Director, U.S. National Oral Health Alliance
As the Program Director for the U.S. National Oral Health Alliance, Nathan works out of the DentaQuest Foundation to execute the mission of the Alliance to forge common ground among the diverse stakeholders of oral health and to rally partners around a sustainable national commitment to optimal oral health. The DentaQuest Foundation acts as a fiscal agent for the Alliance, which is its own nonprofit 501(c)3 organization. As the Alliance’s sole dedicated staff, Nathan manages all Alliance activities and coordinates strategic direction with the Board of Directors. Prior to joining the DentaQuest Foundation and the U.S. National Oral Health Alliance, Nathan served as the Associate Director of the Office of the President at Elderhostel, Inc. (dba Road Scholar), a national nonprofit organization dedicated to adult educational travel and experiential learning. Nathan received a graduate certificate in Dispute Resolution from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, with emphasis on organizational and international conflict management. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), receiving a B.A. with a dual degree in Communication Studies and History.
Matthew Bond
Grants and Programs Associate
Matthew Bond joined the DentaQuest Foundation in 2011 as a Grants and Programs Associate. Previously, Matthew was the Manager of Client Services for Ellipsis Enterprises, a grant-funded academic publishing and meeting planning consultant where he worked closely with foundations to plan and implement symposia and conferences. Matthew also served as an editor on six multi-author, cross-disciplinary volumes spanning such topics as the future of Physics, and the nature of Infinity. Matthew has a dual degree in Philosophy and Political Science from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Brenda Lavasta
Grants and Programs Associate
Brenda Lavasta joined the Foundation as Grant Management Associate in 2008. Previously, she was a Diversity Fellow at the Rhode Island Foundation through the Associated Grant Makers Diversity Fellowship in Philanthropy. The fellowship program aims to inspire the next generation of philanthropic leaders among people of color by offering training and support to a select group of passionate, emerging professionals. Brenda began her career in the Executive Education Department at the Harvard Business School where she held various roles. She received a dual degree in Management and Finance from Simmons College and an MBA from Suffolk University.
Kristine Tourkantonis
Coordinator of Administration
Kristine serves as the Coordinator of Administration for the DentaQuest Foundation and the DentaQuest Institute. Prior to joining DentaQuest, Kristine served as the Distric Administrator at Target Corporation, supporting the District Manager overseeing the operations of eight Target stores north of Boston. Kristine partnered with the corporate Community Affairs department to support surrounding neighborhoods with grants in areas that improved Arts and Music. Prior to Target, Kristine served eight years at Charm Sciences, Inc., a biotechnology corporation that creates diagnostic test kits for the food and dairy industries. Kristine graduated with a Paralegal degreee from Fisher College in Boston, MA.
Mary Ann Kozlowski
Communications Advisor
As the DentaQuest Foundation’s communications advisor, Mary Ann Kozlowski works to disseminate information about our programs and projects to our many constituent groups. Prior to joining the DentaQuest team, Mary Ann worked in technology, education and health care, providing communications outreach to the media and stakeholders. She holds a master’s degree in public relations and communications from Boston University.
Tracy Garland
Senior Advisor for National Programs
Tracy Garland is the Foundation’s Senior Advisor for National Programs. In this role, she develops and leads initiatives that engage multiple funders in multi-year systems change work including: The Funders Oral Health Policy Group and the National Interprofessional Initiative on Oral Health. She is also a Strategic Advisor to the DentaQuest Institute. Prior to joining the DentaQuest Foundation, Ms. Garland served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Washington Dental Service Foundation. Ms. Garland has also served as the Chief Financial Officer in the public utility and dental insurance industries. She holds a Masters Degree in Urban Planning from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Cornell University.
Patrick Finnerty
Senior Advisor for State Oral Health Programs
Patrick Finnerty serves as the Foundation’s leadership resource to state coalitions and health organizations who are working to incorporate oral health into state policy and programs. Mr. Finnerty has a long history with states and public health programs and a unique appreciation of the challenges they face. He is the former Medicaid Director for Virginia, managed the Virginia state employee health benefits program, and directed a legislative health policy commission. He holds Master of Public Administration and B.S. degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University. Pat is also a veteran volunteer at Mission of Mercy (MOM) projects throughout Virginia, which provide free dental care to thousands of uninsured adults.
